Collage – both as medium and methodology – lies at the core of his practice, allowing him to fragment, reassemble, and subvert dominant iconographies and systems of beliefs rooted in American history, mythology and popular culture. At Frieze, Wielebinski presents a new series of works that further his investigation into the aestheticization of violence. Alluding to a fairground shooting booth, the exhibition features a group of resin sculptures cast from existing gun grips. Both seductive and threatening, these objects are displayed on a gaming table whose shape evokes the infinity sign (or the number 8), suggesting a haunting parallel between American sports culture and the seemingly endless recurrence of high school shootings. These ideas extends into a sequence of mosaic-style panels composed of ceramic tiles that are used in the production of ballistic armour. Mounted in custom walnut frames, these works can be seen as shooting targets, protective shields, or portals – antithetical functions through which Wielebinski explores the psychological and visual architecture of violence: how it is normalised, ritualised and aestheticised. Sasha Shevchenko and Pia Zeitzen of Kollektiv Collective, brings together the works of Wilhelm Traeger (1907 - 1980) and Gray Wielebinski (b. 1991) in a unique artistic dialogue and a site-specific, collaborative exercise in temporal contextualisation. We are thrilled to present 13 large-scale collages by Traeger for the first time in the UK alongside site-specific works by London-based contemporary multimedia artist Gray Wielebinski. Representing a generation of Austrian artists who were unable to establish international careers during their lifetime, Traeger’s work encounters that of Wielebinski, which, in contrast, is formed in a globalised and hyperconnected world. Alongside each other, Traeger and Wielebinski demarcate a time where one artist’s tomorrow is the other’s present-day, a moment after the fall and, at once, on the edge of the next. As a conversation between two artists who have never met, Of course I know eternity defies distance – physical, temporal, geographical and that of a lifetime – through Traeger’s and Wielebinski’s shared fascination with collage, both as a medium and a methodology. Together, Traeger’s collages-on-paper dating between 1961 and 1969 and Wielebinski’s site-specific installations interrogate the ways in which time is felt and contextualised. The resulting visual kaleidoscope joins fragments, forms and nuances across the two floors and corridors of the ACF. Here, collage becomes a totalising force that extends beyond the edges of a given artwork, implicating the very walls and stairways of the building they occupy. This artistic and intergenerational exchange explores the intellectual and artistic legacy of the Austrian post-war avant-garde, their questions reverberating in the present moment. Opening on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, Of course I know eternity examines the nonlinearity of history, collaging together the conflicting relationship of hope and fear as it was felt then, as it is felt now. garment, a pin, a seam, a shield is an exhibition of work by Myriam Mihindou, Liz Magor, Joanna Piotrowska, Vivian Lynn, and Gray Wielebinski. Across collage, textile, photography, sculpture and film, the exhibition looks at ways in which the body – and its coverings – become sites of tension, care, rupture, and remediation. Myriam Mihindou’s practice is concerned with repair and resilience, the marks imposed upon the body by trauma and systems of control. Folle (2000), a video projected onto the floor of the gallery, sees the artist’s feet from a first-person perspective, negotiating a wide white crack between two paving stones, a crossing soundtracked by a persistent chorus of laughter. In the 2018 video work La robe envolée, a static shot frames the artist’s legs as she methodically pulls, tears and rips at layered pairs of tights, as if forcibly shedding a skin – an act that feels at once cathartic and violent. Mihindou’s 1999 – 2000 photographic series Sculptures de chair (‘flesh sculptures’) document a ‘ritualised creative process’ in which she would paint, bind, mark, and pierce her hands with silver pins (in these cases, the hand under attack becomes a sharp claw). Pins reappear in Mihindou’s series Le Patron (2022 – 2024), in which fragile, skin-like leaves of paper and silk are layered, tacked, and stitched together. Soaked repeatedly in tea (a material favoured by Mihindou for its association with healing and therapeutic ritual) and ink, the compositions are inscribed with hand-written and sculpted text in graphite and twisted copper wire. They speak a halting language, incorporating fragments of French and Latin, veer between lyrical, incantatory and bureaucratic. Joanna Piotrowska’s Untitled (2024) is a collage of silver gelatin hand prints set in a ditsy print cloth-covered frame, cinched tight on one edge with a steel ring that pierces through the glass and image surface. The enclosed image, overlaid with a small fragment cut from a larger print, hones in on a section of torso enveloped in a loosely draped t-shirt, fabric gathering under a hand firmly clasped around the wearer’s waist – a gesture of affection, protection, or perhaps, constraint. A series of garment collages by Liz Magor from the series Being This (2012/2022) consist of thrifted clothes, folded lovingly into gift boxes lined with pillowy tissue paper. These compositions, accessorised with transposed and reversed labels, insignia, sales tags, and scraps, become proxy for the body and its accumulations, as dainty gloves point toward a moment of interest, or mimic a hand raised in a gesture of courtesy or defence. Pocketed wrappers, papers, and cigarette butts of anonymous provenance are tucked into the box margins like footnotes. In 2018’s Open and Closed, two well-worn woollen blankets, purchased from second-hand stores, hang like shrugged coats, each wrapped in clear film similar to that of dry cleaners’ plastic garment bags. The works are derived from a series in which Magor uses dyes and embellishments to enhance and preserve the stains, singes, and frays accrued throughout the textiles’ years of service, before dry cleaning and re-presenting them. They are riddled with moth-holes and burns that are carefully filled and darned (Closed) or haloed in red so that they radiate outwards (Open), resembling hides scattered with wounds, blemishes, or bullet holes. New works by Gray Wielebinski (2025) are formed of mosaic-like panels of monochromatic tiles mounted in custom shaped frames evocative of houses, headstones, or vests. Wielebinski’s tiles are, in fact, bulletproof ceramic body armour, so shaped to cover and defend a human torso. Extracted from the fabric covers within which they would normally be concealed, and from their intended context of gun culture (and attendantly, law enforcement, military gear and violence), the panels exist as exposed alienated material, encoded with implications of bodily protection, shelter and self defence. Taking the shape of Rorschach ink blots reminiscent of shields or shells, Vivian Lynn’s Mind Field series (2007) embodies Lynn’s conception of a mutable, permeable selfhood in constant interrelation with its surroundings. One of the last bodies of work produced in her lifetime, the series insists beyond internal-external binaries as they relate to the material, permeable existence of the world around us. “A corporeal, visceral, neural, erotic mind self in the world,” as she elaborated in a 2007 interview, “where identity emerges, ebbs, flows and mutates from behaviour in the lived space we inhabit. No awful inner self but an epidermal self, where as Sappho said, ‘a subtle fire has stolen beneath my flesh’.” The skin, here, becomes the seat of the self; a porous meeting place of body, mind and environment, its fragility hinted at in Lynn’s use of wrinkled, glue soaked gampi paper sheets that are just sheer enough to disclose the metallic aluminium surface beneath. In Mind field: a hair strand contemplates the order X, the composition appears to split open at its centre as if stretched too tight, revealing a fine, subcutaneous seam of gold. Bringing together works that linger on the body not solely as image but as evidence and residue, A garment, a pin, a seam, a shield explores how these charged surfaces can absorb and carry histories, often unspoken or withheld. What emerges is a shared language of puncture, tension, and repair across the body: a pin pressed into flesh, a seam undone and remade, a blanket wounded and sutured, or an armour that mourns its own violence. The body appears refracted, displaced, and made into something we read through materials: heavy with meaning, soft with memory, precariously held together.<img width="6000" height="4500" exploration of the boundaries of private and public spaces, with references spanning sci-fi, Cold War legacies and games, The Red Sun is High, the Blue Low transforms the ICA into an investigation of constructed worlds within worlds. In doing so, Wielebinski responds to our neighbours on The Mall: Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Park, and the Admiralty Citadel. The exhibition’s title is taken from a 1978 essay by science fiction writer and critic Samuel R. Delany. Delany uses the sentence as an example of the corrective and revisionary process of reading science fiction, in which ‘each new word revises the complex picture we had a moment before.’ In Wielebinski’s installation environment, overlapping worlds feel both familiar and strange. A large electronic basketball scoreboard signals to visitors their unknown role in some mysterious, surely unwinnable, game. The sun appears in multiple and sequential instances across the space, mapping a potential collapse of temporalities. Now a dark, absurdist bunker, the ICA’s smaller reading room stands in contrast to the light-filled gallery visible to those who place their eye on the aperture of a telescoping peephole connecting the two spaces. In its privacy, surveillance and exclusivity, the bunker also speaks the language of illicit spaces where separating oneself leads towards community formation rather than isolation.Wielebinski’s commission could be viewed as a processing of terminal capitalism and the omnipresence of a collective low-grade anxiety. In the wake of a pandemic that forced the tilling of our social ground, exposing our governing systems and conventions to scrutiny they could not withstand, this exhibition imagines how we might position our individual and public selves anew. And with it comes an unexpected playfulness and optimism, the ineffable condition of living in a time in which apocalyptic precarity feels realistic and maybe also revelatory. <img width="1500" the dialogue between curator Stella Bottai and artist Gray Wielebinski around the so-called “mammone” (mummy’s boy) – a notion that their own embodied experiences – as mother and son respectively – celebrate, critique, and reconfigure.The exhibition draws on queer, feminist, and psychoanalytic understandings of the highly charged and symbolically rich relationality between mothers and sons to attend to themes of sacrifice, co-dependency, desire, identity, denial, hierarchies, possessiveness, and betrayal. Motherboy takes up the strange convergence of power encoded in the mother’s boy – the undervalued, often invisibilized labor of the mother versus the overindulged, privileged lot of the “Mama’s boy" – treating this as a starting point of broader political critique.At the same time, it thinks expansively about the category of the motherboy, examining variations on this kinship form across different gendered, racial, and cultural configurations. Indexing the many abstracted modes in which we encounter this relation – through the imaginary of the mother tongue, motherland, the Holy Mother, and the prodigal son – Motherboy offers a point of entry into fundamental questions of love, power, and asymmetry.The show features new and recent works selected in close dialogue with the participating artists. Spanning painting, collage, sculpture, video and installation, these pieces articulate different atmospheres across three floors of the gallery. Bodily postures form a motif across the show, contemplating the significance of certain actions – such as standing, posing, sleeping, hitting, or embracing – in connection to interpersonal hierarchies and emotional language.Motherboy is rooted in the Italian context and yet casting a wider lens beyond national identities. The term mammismo (“motherism”) is an example of an invented tradition from the post-war period, when – according to historian Marina d’Amelio – writers such as Corrado Alvaro, who first coined the term in 1952, were looking for reasons to explain Italy’s social ills. Poor mothering was made accountable for the shortcomings of Italian men and therefore of Italian society at large – a concept that in great part seeps through today’s wider culture, as noted by academic Jacqueline Rose, who writes “mothers are socially the ultimate scapegoat for our personal and political failings, for everything which is wrong with the world.”Overall, the exhibition stages a reflection on the horrifying, tender and comic aspects of the mother-son relationship as a mirror of both as&nbsp;sociation and dissociation, addressing its repercussions on collective social imagination. By way of reflecting on authority, emancipation, love, and vulnerability, Motherboy attempts a generative withdrawal from patriarchal constructs of this notion, in pursuit of a familial bond which is For most of us, the problem this question poses begins in infancy, when, feeling bored, we notice that a sibling sits temptingly within kicking distance. The first, tentative kick elicits a laugh, a half-hearted kick in return. Gradually the kicks become sharper, more ambiguous in tone. Aggressive feelings surface, seemingly out of nowhere. What began as a joke turns into a game, then a competition, then a fight. Gulps of laughter morph into screams and tears. One child calls for mother, while the other submits their plea: We were just playing! Gray Wielebinski’s Fratricide investigates the hazy border between violence and play, love and hate, punishment and pleasure, crystallized in a series of collaged paddles reminiscent of those used in fraternity hazing rituals. Although first recorded as a hazing practice in the late nineteenth century, the popularity of paddling drastically increased after the Second World War, when ex-soldiers brought military rituals into their fraternities. The contemporary backlash against hazing has led many Greek organizations to repurpose paddles as decorative gift objects, a shift Wielebinski seems to emulate in adorning his sculptures with collage. At the same time, the imagery found here—of male beauty, severed body parts, homoeroticism, and tools of discipline—speaks to an entangled legacy of desire, aggression, and humiliation that cannot easily be shaken off. Wielebinski’s practice has long attended to the disavowed homoeroticism within normative American masculinity, whether in the form of a passionate embrace between football teammates or the perfectly sculpted male bodies put to commercial use by Abercrombie &amp; Fitch. With Fratricide, he compels us to attend to the long history of cruelty within which such desires are too often embalmed. Alongside these paddles, Privacy Screen #2, a hauntingly majestic room divider manages to simultaneously evoke an ornate gate, a torture device, and the mundane dystopia of hostile architecture. Playing on the semantic slide between intimacy and private property, the title speaks to the futility of absolute privacy in a hypersecuritized and surveilled world.&nbsp; Failed attempts at separation lie at the heart of the fratricidal impulse, which inevitably leads into the eerie territory of twins, doubles, and doppelgangers. As literalized by the word itself, homophobia can be understood as fear of the selfsame, a hostility to the repressed desires lying within one’s own heart. Terrified of the threat from inside, we erect barriers, hopelessly attempting to curtail our own freedom by forestalling the freedom of others. The psychoanalytic tradition famously traces the root of oppression to the familial scene of conflict and competition. Highlighting “the fratriarchal dimension of the oppression of women,” the feminist psychoanalyst Juliet Mitchell has emphasized that “violence against women is initiated by the wish to eradicate a sibling who replaces the toddler as the baby.” However literally we might take such claims, if violence toward others has any origin in fratricide, then it might be possible to reroute this trope toward a liberatory potential. “Doppelgängers, by messing with our heads and our illusions of sovereignty, can help teach us this lesson: that we are not as separate from one another as we might think,” Naomi Klein has recently argued. “Not as individuals, and perhaps not even as groups of individuals who have been born into various kinds of seemingly eternal fratricidal duels.” <img restroom as a monument, sanctuary and secret. Evoking the Victorian Gothic style of architecture, the piece references feminist campaigns that equalized access to public sanitation facilities in the 20th century and led to Selfridges being the first department store to open women’s public toilets. At the same time, I am interested in the persistence of the public bathroom’s sexual connotations, particularly thanks to the major role these facilities have played in the history of anonymous sex between men. Today, these two opposing visions of the purpose of public bathrooms—one that attaches safety and freedom to lack of sexual contact, and another that does the opposite—collide in the “bathroom panic” that remains a consistent point of focus for transphobic speech and legislation. The two vitrines feature walkways divided by applique vanity screens that invite viewers to enter inside the window displays and reflect on the paradox of being alone in public. &nbsp; One of the centerpieces and recurring motifs is a black wreath constructed out of security spikes, inspired by an anecdote from the sociologist Laud Humphrey’s account of cruising in public restrooms, Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places (1970). In this book, Humphreys notes that while the men he witnesses cruising in the bathroom do not develop intimate attachments to the people they have sex with there, some become sentimentally enamored with the space of the bathroom itself. He cites the example of one man who found out that a park bathroom where he met others for sex was to be closed for demolition. On hearing this, the man sprayed a wreath black and laid it on top of the building. As a symbol of mourning, the black wreath marks the loss of public space, cruising sites, and the gay men who populated them through the AIDS crisis. At the same time, the wreath also recalls a very different association: the Christmas period, the annual climax of consumerism, a time often associated with bourgeois normativity.
